In July, Mwaka Kogwa takes place - a four-day festival celebrating the Shirazi new year - Shirazis were the first to settle in Zanzibar. The best place to visit during the festivities is in Makunduchi, a village in the south. People flock from afar to watch the men play fight (with banana stems), while the women sing songs about love and village life in traditional attire. A hut is set alight, with the fire extinguished by locals, before a feast is laid on. Visitors are welcomed to experience this fascinating insight into the culture. In November, Zanzibar hosts an international triathlon and marathon, which conform to Olympic standards and regulations. Passing through some of Zanzibar's finest locations, the events attract visitors and competitors from East Africa, Asia and Europe.
