These two cosmopolitan beach resorts are favoured
by the Thai Royal family and Bangkok weekenders, so expect
exceptional beaches and a thriving restaurant scene, especially in
the more sophisticated Hua Hin. Less European backpackers and more
Thai families on holiday, these two resorts feel more traditional
than some of Thailand's other popular beach destinations. Since
King Rama VII built his 'Far From Worries' Palace in Hua Hin in
1922, the stretch of coast has been the place to be for Thai
society. On the other hand at the weekend Cha Am is a bit more
raucous Thai fun, but there's nothing wrong with that.
Both Hua Hin and Cha Am offer excellent fresh seafood; look for
squid, prawns, mussels and crab in soups, stir fries and curries
that are particularly delicious from the bustling night markets.
You'll also find seafood on offer at the beach and both towns have
a good selection of restaurants. Try the local beer at the Hua Hin
Brewing Company, a micro-brewery with live music.
• Night markets are fun for browsing and people watching
• Good selection of handicrafts and souvenirs
• Particularly good for cheap fashion and delicious food
Discover Hua Hin & Cha Am
As one of Thailand's favourite beach resorts, you need to do
nothing more all day than enjoy lying on one of the soft golden
beaches. There are plenty of excellent places to indulge in
watersports, with Hua Hin and Cha Am offering snorkelling, scuba
diving, sailing, windsurfing and fishing.
For spectacular panoramic views of Hua Hin, climb to the top of
Chopstick Hill to the temple of Wat Khao Lad. Look out for the
monkeys that roam the temple grounds. Nature lovers will enjoy a
day trip to the Kaeng Krachen National Park to see the spectacular
Pa La U waterfalls and wildlife.
• Hua Hin has developed into a quaint and traditional seaside
• Meaning 'stone head', Hua Hin is named after the smooth round
boulders found on its pale sandy beach
• Traditional wooden piers line the waterfront in the centre of
• There is an array of market stalls, open-air restaurants
specialising in local seafood and lively bars
• Popular for weekend escapes from Bangkok, Cha Am is a more
traditional Thai seaside resort
