- Overview
Exquisite natural beauty, glorious golden beaches and a laid-back attitude to life, make Tobago a great choice for anyone seeking a tropical chill out zone. While neighbouring Trinidad is the place to party, Tobago is often referred to as its smaller and prettier little sister, content to live the quiet life. Along its seven by 26 miles of coastline you'll find plenty of stunning beaches and sheltered coves. What's more it's small enough to easily explore all the main attractions, and still leave plenty of time for well-earned rest and relaxation.
To get a true flavour of the island's appeal there are a few must see sights. Pigeon Point, on the southern tip of the island, has one of the most scenic views and a lovely stretch of beach. Ride out from here on a glass-bottom boat to the superb Buccoo Reef National Park, where you can witness the coral reefs and multicoloured array of fish. Then indulge in a dip in the Nylon Pool, a natural emerald lagoon that sparkles in the sunlight. A trip to the island's capital, Scarborough, provides much interest and is where you'll find the best shopping and many a good restaurant. Visit the striking Fort of King George dating back to 1804, boasting amazing panoramic views out over Scarborough and beyond. The fort also houses an interesting art gallery and museum, which is well worth a look.
A good day to pick to stroll around the capital is either Friday or Saturday, as these are the local market days or for something more adventurous opt for a guided tour of the island's rainforest. You'll find the local guides have a wealth of knowledge and enthusiasm for their lush surroundings. Tobago has some beautiful waterfalls to see. Perhaps the most stunning of which is Argyle Falls. Or for the best beach on the island track down Englishman's Bay, situated halfway along the north coast overlooking the warm Caribbean Sea. This beach is rumoured to have been the inspiration for Daniel Defoe's famous novel, Robinson Crusoe. You'll find a vast curved stretch of soft powder sand with an equally impressive backdrop of dense rainforest, making it a place you could quite happily imagine being marooned on.
