The reserve's name is derived from its indigenous inhabitants, the Masai, a cattle-rearing tribe whose word for mottled, 'mara;, is used to describe the patchy nature of the reserve's landscape. Spanning 1,510 square kilometres of the south west of Kenya, the Masai Mara is the northernmost section of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem trailing south into neighbouring Tanzania.
